Benadryl does not improve infant sleep.

Click on the above text to read the abstract. Just let me tell you, that did NOT make my morning.

Cara has slept about 12 hours total in the past two days. I will try just about anything at this point.

She was asleep and in her crib last night by 9 pm. Her routine was the same as always and she even ate a large quantity of sticky rice with two cubes of asparagus and a cube of carrots. She had a nice warm bath followed closely there after by an extended session of boob. I even dosed her with Motrin to ward off a sore mouth.

By all accounts, Caroline should have slept till the morning.

That didn’t happen. She was up every hour once her head hit the crib. I tried EVERYTHING. We walked, I nursed her, I put her down awake and left the room for 15 minutes, I rocked her…you get the idea.

Finally, after about two and a half hours, her eyes got heavy and she slept. Until four this morning. She slept for four hours straight. I’m not bitching, mind you. I was celebrating. Those four hours of uninterrupted sleep felt like I had slept for twelve hours. It was heaven.

I bit the bullet this morning and left a message for Dr. Dorey. I’m not sure what exactly I expect him to say. I’m not comfortable with the CIO (cry it out) method. It just doesn’t feel “right” to me. Not to mention Caroline escalates so quickly that ten minutes for a normal child is like an hour for her.

In desperation, I tried it last night. I left her in her crib and let her fuss and gripe and scream. Not only did it NOT work, it woke her up even more. That idea backfired just a bit.

So, here I sit. Cara’s playing happily in Beck’s kennel and has been up since about 7 am. She shows no signs of being sleepy and lord knows I can’t force her to sleep.

Good thing she won’t take a bottle…I’d be tempted to spike her milk.
