I had a friend who had to tell their 3 year old son that their dog passed... he still asks where the dog is. That's hard.

I completely understand, btw. I LOVE my cat, love her to pieces, love having her around, love her completely... but there's only so much I can afford and as much as I love her, there's no way I can go into debt for her.

I hope that Oscar pulls through... remember, don't cats have 9 lives? Has he really used them all already?

That's horrible to hear! I haven't had this incident with my little one, but I do remember when I was little - older then 2 - and my parents told me they were putting our dog to sleep. I spent the next few years wondering when they were going to wake him back up (we joke about that now-a-days). It's a very confusing for the little ones.

It's a learning experience. Good luck with Oscar, I hope he pulls through!

I'm so sorry about poor Oscar. Losing a family member - whether two or four legged - is always tough.

Being farmers (and hunters to boot) our kids have been exposed to death since they were very young. I think it's harder on us as parents than it is on them. My policy has always been simply to give them as much information as they need, but no more. For some kids it's enough to just say "he was very sick, and passed away" for others more details are needed. Take it one step at a time. Don't feel like you have to give her the whole she-bang unless she asks for it. Answer one question at a time, keeping it as simple as possible with every step.

Good luck!
