il-lee-iz-êm [1]

n.

  1. The use of a third person pronoun (he or she) referring to oneself or someone expected to be addressed as you.
  2. The use of third person expressions in referring to yourself as, “Stop asking me the same thing.

I got on this weird tear on Twitter where I was referring to myself in the third person.

It was fun at first and then it just got damn tiring. Maybe my brain just isn’t wired for all of that work. You try it for a couple of hours and see how it turns out for you.

Maybe I’m just not as smart as Mike Tyson, Bob Dole or Lord Voldemort.

Illeism makes me think Silence of the Lambs[2] – if you haven’t read the book, you must.

It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.

OK. So it’s not illeism. It’s dehumanization but I always think of that quote. And I wonder if they aren’t a bit of the same thing. Both serve to remove the…what word am I looking for? Weird?

Yeah. That’s the word.

I suspect I was just looking for an excuse to use that quote. Cause it’s awesome.
